Mu

Category: Mysteries
Mu is an ancient sunken continent in the Pacific. Some of the islands in that region are said to be the tops of mountains on the continent.

Before Plate Tectonics was an accepted geological theory, scientists made reference to subsiding and rising land masses to explain patterns of biogeography. The rising of the Isthmus of Panama, for example, was used to explain evidence of a faunal 'interchange' between North and South America. Mu is therefore used to explain how people came to inhabit the various isolated islands of Polynesia, and the cultural similarities between them. They are, according to the theory, the remnants of a once vast civilization.

An Englishman named James Churchward was the first to theorize the existence of Mu. He based this on his translation of ancient texts that he had discovered describing the continent. He believed that after the sinking of the island, its inhabitants became refugees and spread throughout the earth.
