Rat King

Rat king is a name given to a group of rats that have become intertwined at their tales. The most common cases of intertwinement are caused by blood, dirt, ice, fecal matter or knotting. These animals, being highly intelligent can quickly adapt to their new living conditions and learn to cooperate with the ones they are connected to.
The number of connected rats in a Rat king vary, but naturally the more individuals the Rat kings composed of, the rarer it is.
The largest known Rat king ever to be found and preserved can now be seen in Museum Mauritianum in Altenburg, Germany. This Mummified Rat King was found in 1828 in a miller's fireplace at Buchheim. It consists of 32 rats. (see picture above)

The name "Rat king" originated from the belief that the Rat king needed a throne to sit on and that this was created by his subjects by intertwine their tales. Sometimes unfortunately this intertwining went terrible wrong and the rats could not be separated.
This is also why Rat kings where seen as an extremely bad Omen and the bringers of plagues. For this was a sign that the king led his people into the human territory.
