There are two many unknowns and as its a sport no one can ever know what is going to happen.

Well a lot of em can be neglected and as the article states, they are predicting the goal difference not the outcome itsself.
I believe that this is possible to do as basically everything has a chance of happening and all you need to do is find out what has the biggest chance at that moment.

Surely though, the unknowns aren't really that unknown, they are just added complications and the chances of them occurring or whatever just have to be factored in.

Yea, but the same goes for the weather :P
Anything can happen and they often are wrong, this is similar.
It would be less reliable but change the odds enough to have a larger chance of guessing right?
